Empowering New Year’s Resolutions for Breast Cancer Survivors: Embrace Health and Happiness

1. Prioritize Self-Care

Self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity, especially after facing breast cancer. This year, commit to activities that nurture your physical and emotional well-being. Whether it’s a weekly yoga class, a relaxing bath, or simply taking time to read a good book, make self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine. Here are some of my favorite book series: The Best Book Series to Dive Into This Winter.

2. Focus on Nutrition

Your body has been through a lot, and good nutrition plays a crucial role in recovery and overall health. Consider incorporating more whole foods, fresh fruits, and vegetables into your meals. If you’re unsure where to start, consult a nutritionist familiar with the needs of cancer survivors. See this post, to discover some anti-cancer foods: The Best Foods to Fight Against Breast Cancer.

3. Stay Active

Exercise has numerous benefits, including improving mood, reducing fatigue, and supporting overall health. Choose activities you enjoy, whether walking, swimming, or dancing. Setting small, achievable goals can help you stay motivated throughout the year. I love hiking and taking walks with my dog and children.

4. Connect with Support Networks

Survivorship can sometimes feel isolating, but you’re not alone. Resolve to stay connected with support groups, both online and in person. Sharing experiences and advice with others who understand your journey can be incredibly uplifting. I joined two Facebook groups that support breast cancer. The first is a Breast Cancer support group for patients and their loved ones and the second is a Verzenio Support Group. These support groups are wonderful for questions and advice from people who are going through similar treatments. It is nice to know that you are not alone in your fight against Breast Cancer.

5. Advocate for Regular Checkups

Prioritize your follow-up appointments and screenings. Staying proactive about your health is a powerful way to take control and ensure peace of mind. Keep a calendar or use reminders to stay on top of these crucial appointments. I had my first mammogram after active treatment earlier in December and I advocated for an ultrasound to make sure the scar tissue I was feeling was just scar tissue. My scans came back normal which I am so grateful for. Here is a picture of me at my appointment. The mammogram was uncomfortable but did not hurt as much as my last one. My mom and I went to a nice lunch afterward to celebrate.

6. Practice Gratitude

Surviving breast cancer often brings a new perspective on life. Embrace this by starting a gratitude journal. Each day, write down a few things you’re thankful for. It’s a simple practice that can transform your mindset and bring positivity to your days.

7. Explore New Hobbies

This year, try something new that sparks joy and creativity. Whether it’s painting, gardening, cooking, or learning a musical instrument, hobbies can be therapeutic and fulfilling. They also provide a sense of accomplishment and fun. This winter I am going to work on making different fun healthy meals with my sister. We love to cook so we are going to start making healthy easy meals. We will share them with you so follow us for our new recipes coming this winter!

8. Strengthen Relationships

Use the new year to nurture your relationships. Spend quality time with loved ones, reconnect with old friends, and cherish the people who supported you during your journey. Building a strong support system is invaluable. I am working on making sure I have time to meet with friends for lunch.

9. Give Back to the Community

Consider volunteering or mentoring others who are newly diagnosed with breast cancer. Sharing your experience and offering support can be empowering for both you and those you help. It’s a wonderful way to turn your journey into a source of inspiration. I am on a committee at work that donates money to different charities. We also do volunteer work around our community and I truly enjoy helping others. I also started a cancer support group at work that helps others in my office talk about their cancer concerns for loved ones or themselves.

10. Celebrate Milestones

Take time to celebrate your progress and achievements. Whether it’s the anniversary of your diagnosis, treatment completion, or simply a great day, acknowledging these moments helps you stay positive and motivated.

The journey after breast cancer is deeply personal, and your resolutions should reflect your unique needs and goals. As you step into the new year, remember to be kind to yourself and take one day at a time. Here’s to a year filled with health, happiness, and hope!
