Welcome back to Twins for Wellness, a platform dedicated to sharing stories of strength, resilience, and empowerment. In this blog post, we talk about radiation. This is the next step in my treatment journey. I have researched some different steps on how to prepare for radiation.
Best 6 Steps on How to Prepare for Radiation
Step 1. Consultation with a radiation oncologist:
You will meet with a radiation oncologist who will assess your case and determine the appropriate radiation therapy plan for you. They will explain the treatment process and potential side effects. I met with my radiation oncologist and he is wonderful. I will have 30 radiation treatments, 5 days a week.
Step 2. Simulation:
A simulation session is conducted to plan the radiation treatment precisely. This may involve a CT scan to map the treatment area and the placement of small markers on your skin for accurate positioning during each session. I did my simulation and it was not too bad.
Step 3. Marking the treatment area:
The radiation oncology team will mark the treatment area on your skin using small tattoos or permanent ink markers. These marks help ensure accurate positioning during each treatment session.
Step 4. Skincare:
Your healthcare team will provide guidance on caring for your skin during radiation therapy. They may recommend avoiding irritants such as perfumes, deodorants, or harsh soaps in the treatment area and suggest using gentle skincare products.
Step 5. Managing side effects:
Your healthcare team will discuss potential side effects of radiation therapy, such as skin redness, fatigue, or breast swelling. They will provide guidance on managing these side effects, including skincare routines, recommended medications, and lifestyle adjustments.
Step 6. Lifestyle considerations:
It’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle during radiation therapy. Eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, getting regular exercise, and getting enough rest can help support your overall well-being during treatment.
I hope these 6 steps will help you prepare for the next step in your breast cancer journey. My journey will start in August and I know these steps will help me prepare for radiation therapy.
