How to Prepare for Terrifying Chemotherapy

Hello from Twins4wellness in this blog post, we talk about how to prepare for terrifying chemotherapy. At the beginning of my breast cancer journey, I did a lot of research on how to get ready for chemotherapy. We’ve all heard horror stories about chemotherapy, but preparing for Chemotherapy can make the treatment process less scary.

I started my chemo journey by preparing a list of ways to prepare for terrifying chemotherapy.  Here is a picture of my first Chemotherapy session.

Here are 9 Steps on How to Prepare for Terrifying Chemotherapy

1. Consult with an Oncologist.

Talk to an oncologist to understand the treatment plan which will include the drugs to be administered, the expected side effects, and the overall schedule. This will give you an idea of what to expect. Bring a notepad and pen to write down any information that your doctor tells you.

2. Arrange for Support.

Identify friends or family members who can accompany you to appointments or provide assistance during treatment. Having a support system in place is invaluable. I brought my mom and sister-in-law to most of my chemotherapy sessions. It made the sessions go by faster and it was comforting to know someone was there with me.

3. Ask Questions.

Don’t hesitate to ask your cancer team any questions you have about chemotherapy. Understand the potential side effects, precautions to take, and the available support services.

4. Arrange Transportation.

Chemotherapy sessions can leave you feeling tired or weak. Plan for transportation to and from the treatment facility. During my first 4 infusions, my mom drove me because the chemotherapy made me feel drowsy. It was nice not to have to worry about driving home.

5. Take care of Practical Matters.

Before starting chemotherapy address any practical matters that may need attention. This may include organizing finances, scheduling work leave if necessary, and arranging for childcare or pet care. I had a great support system that helped me set up child care when I had my infusions.

6. Eat well and stay hydrated.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet before treatment to help support your body during chemotherapy. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoid consuming foods that might interact negatively with chemotherapy drugs. I always ate breakfast before my chemotherapy session and I also had a snack while getting my infusion. It sounds strange to eat during an infusion but that is what the nurse recommended. I also drank at least 16 ounces of water before I started the infusion. 

7. Create a comfortable environment.

Make your space at the treatment center as comfortable as possible. Gather items like blankets, pillows, books, or entertainment devices to keep you occupied during treatment sessions. Also, have a place set up at home with these items so that you can rest after each session. 

8. Emotional well-being.

Prioritize your mental well-being. Engage in activities that help reduce stress, such as meditation, exercise, or spending time with loved ones. Consider seeking counseling or joining support groups to help navigate the emotional challenges of chemotherapy.

9. Prepare for potential side effects.

Talk to your cancer team about potential side effects and how to manage them. Ask about recommended medications, dietary adjustments, or lifestyle changes that can help alleviate discomfort.

These are the 9 steps to help prepare for chemotherapy. Remember everyone’s experience with chemotherapy is unique. Your cancer team will guide you through the process and provide personalized advice based on your specific situation.
