A breast cancer diagnosis can be an incredibly challenging and life-altering experience. From the emotional rollercoaster to the physical toll that treatments can take on your body, the journey is filled with ups and downs. However, maintaining a focus on your overall well-being is crucial during this time. One way to do this is through regular exercise. Exercise can help boost your mood, increase your energy levels, and improve your overall quality of life. In this blog post, we’ll explore some of the best exercises to incorporate into your breast cancer journey, emphasizing the importance of consulting your healthcare team before starting any new exercise regimen.

Gentle Yoga

Yoga is a gentle and low-impact exercise that can be incredibly beneficial for individuals going through breast cancer treatments. It promotes flexibility, balance, and relaxation. Yoga also encourages mindfulness, helping you connect with your body and manage stress.

During your breast cancer journey, consider practicing restorative yoga, which involves using props like bolsters and blankets to support your body in various poses. These poses can help alleviate tension and discomfort. Be sure to let your yoga instructor know about your condition, so they can provide modifications tailored to your needs.

Walking

Walking is one of the simplest yet most effective exercises you can incorporate into your daily routine. A leisurely stroll around your neighborhood or a local park can do wonders for your physical and mental well-being. Walking helps maintain cardiovascular health, strengthen bones, and boost your mood. Plus, it’s a great way to enjoy some fresh air and sunshine.

Start with short walks and gradually increase your duration and intensity as your body allows. Always listen to your body, and if you experience any discomfort or fatigue, take a break.

Strength Training

Strength training exercises can help rebuild muscle mass and improve your overall strength. Maintaining muscle tone is especially important during breast cancer treatments, as it can counteract the muscle loss that may occur due to inactivity or medication side effects.

Consider using resistance bands or light weights to perform exercises like bicep curls, tricep extensions, and leg lifts. Start with low resistance and gradually increase it over time. It’s essential to work with a certified trainer who has experience working with cancer patients to ensure your safety and proper form. I started using a personal trainer during chemotherapy. I was able to use a cancer fitness program provided to me by my Cancer center.

Swimming

Swimming is a fantastic exercise option for individuals going through a breast cancer journey because it’s gentle on the joints while providing a full-body workout. The buoyancy of the water reduces the impact on your body, making it easier to move and exercise without added strain.

Swimming can also help alleviate hot flashes and night sweats, which are common side effects of certain breast cancer treatments. However, be cautious if you have an open wound or infection, and always check with your doctor before starting any aquatic exercise program.

Mindful Breathing and Meditation

While not a traditional form of exercise, mindful breathing and meditation are invaluable tools for managing stress, anxiety, and pain during your breast cancer journey. These practices can be done anywhere and anytime, providing a sense of calm and control in challenging moments.

Consider joining a meditation or mindfulness group, or use apps and online resources that offer guided sessions. The deep breathing and relaxation techniques can help you cope with the emotional and physical challenges that often accompany a breast cancer diagnosis. I found an app that I used during my recovery from my lumpectomy that helped me sleep at night.

Incorporating exercise into your breast cancer journey can be a powerful way to support your overall well-being. However, it’s crucial to consult with your healthcare team before starting any new exercise program. They can provide guidance and recommendations tailored to your specific situation and treatment plan.

Remember that the goal of exercise during your breast cancer journey is not necessarily to push yourself to the limit but to find activities that make you feel better physically and mentally. Listen to your body, be patient with yourself, and seek the support and guidance you need to thrive during this challenging time. Your journey is unique, and your path to wellness should be too.
