Here are Some Unusual Side Effects of Chemo for Breast Cancer

Chemobrain:

Some people undergoing chemotherapy may experience cognitive changes such as memory lapses, difficulty concentrating, or trouble finding the right words. This phenomenon is often referred to as “chemobrain” and can be temporary or persist for longer periods. I experienced chemobrain and couldn’t always find the correct words to use.

Nail changes:

Chemotherapy may cause changes in your nails, including discoloration, brittleness, or ridges. In some cases, nails may become more susceptible to infections. My middle fingernails became brittle towards the end of my chemo treatment.

Hormonal changes:

Certain chemotherapy drugs can affect hormone levels in the body leading to temporary or permanent menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, or changes in menstrual cycles. My menstrual cycles stopped during my chemotherapy treatment and I started experiencing hot flashes.

Heart health issues:

Some chemotherapy drugs, particularly certain types called anthracyclines, can have long-term effects on the heart. These effects may include weakening of the heart muscle or an increased risk of developing heart conditions later in life.

Increased risk of infections:

Chemotherapy can temporarily weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections. It’s important to take precautions, such as practicing good hand hygiene and avoiding crowded places during treatment.

Emotional and psychological effects:

Dealing with breast cancer and undergoing chemotherapy can have emotional and psychological impacts. It’s common for individuals to experience anxiety, depression, mood swings, or changes in body image during this time. Seeking support from loved ones, counselors, or support groups can be helpful.

Conclusion:

It is important to remember that not everyone will experience these side effects. But if you have concerns you should let your doctor or health care team know about your unusual symptoms.
